Deck Review: The Crystal Visions Tarot

Wands cards from the Crystal Visions Tarot.
Ace of Wands, Four of Wands, Six of Wands, and King of Wands from the Crystal Visions Tarot by Jennifer Galasso, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., 2011.

The Crystal Visions Tarot is a popular deck that I often see used in meetups and classes. Every time I see it I am drawn to its dreamy colors, clear symbolism, and tender scenes. Created by fantasy artist Jennifer Galasso and published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., the Crystal Visions Tarot is a playful and good-natured deck that produces gentle, compassionate readings.

A Nature-Oriented Fantasy Deck

The Crystal Visions Tarot has a fantasy fairy feel to it, but wings are at a minimum and there’s nary a pointy ear in sight. Rather, the characters express an idealized beauty with honest, open faces. This nature-oriented deck is set in woods and marshes abounding with animals, flowers, crystals, and gems. The scenes are simple but deep, drawing you into well-trod paths and receding hills, inviting you to explore what’s around the bend and out of sight.

Colorful, Seasonal Imagery

Two of Pentacles, Eight of Pentacles, Nine of Pentacles, and Queen of Pentacles from the Crystal Visions Tarot by Jennifer Galasso, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., 2011.

The suits reflect the four seasons with corresponding color schemes. Purple is the universal tint, while the Suit of Cups relaxes in blue and teal, and the Suit of Wands smolders with red and orange. Cups are the season of spring, with water lily ponds, cattails, dragonflies, and romantic moonlit nights. Wands show the heat of summer, but at a cloudy twilight, with eagles, lions, flaming staffs, and daring mountain passes.

Abundant trees heavy with fruit and frequent outcroppings of crystals provide a harvest feel for the Suit of Pentacles, while greens and golds feel warm and fresh in the glimmering haze of autumn. Cold snow covers the ground in the Suit of Swords. Above, black crows and ravens hover in the bluish-gray stormy sky. Thorned red roses add vibrancy and passion to this otherwise bleak suit.

Banners across the bottom of each card provide the straightforward information of number and suit or Major Arcana title. “The Unknown Card” is an extra image with a seeress in a gothic tower offering the viewer her crystal ball while a crow flies off with a glinting, crystal-tipped wand.

The Crystal Visions Tarot Invites You to Imaginatively Explore its Intuitive Vistas

The images of this deck deserve a second look. Sometimes they seem bland and simple, but close examination reveals an appealing variety of color, shade, and shadow. Inspiring pricks of light guide you into the images. Highly suggestive backgrounds offer expanses for imaginative or astral exploration. You can scry into this deck for deeper connection with the images and your own intuition.

Discover Your Perfect Match with the Crystal Visions Tarot

VI The Lovers, VII The Chariot, IX The Hermit, and XV The Devil from the Crystal Visions Tarot by Jennifer Galasso, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., 2011.

There is a shadowy serenity to these cards, a dim aloofness. Many of the cards feature a single character, but when placed in the patterns of a spread, they open up to each other. Denizens of this mythical realm crest a hill and discover their perfect match. Casting looks over their shoulders at their complement, an enchanted game of hide-and-seek plays out in the misty valleys, canopied lanes, and aspiring peaks of this otherworldly deck.
