Position 1: How We Love

The first card represents how you and your partner love. Look at the image in the card you drew here. How would you describe it in terms of people relating to each other? Are there two characters, only one, or more? Does the character or scene look inviting? Unapproachable? Still and quiet? Energized and motivated? The card you drew here should offer a clear reflection of how you and your partner relate.

Also consider the meaning of the suit of the card. Wands generally represent passionate relationships, They can also address leadership, control, or independence. Cups are loving and nurturing, They can reflect our emotional responses, fantasies, and dreams. Swords can be about healthy debate and communication. Sometimes they can represent stress, an overactive mind, or letting go. Pentacles are solid, lasting, and committed. They can represent having or needing resources.

If you draw a difficult card here, or one that doesn’t seem to honestly illustrate the relationship, try pulling cards for some additional questions, such as:

  • What am I not seeing in this relationship?
  • Which aspect of my relationship is this card addressing?
  • How can I turn this situation around?

Position 2: How We Lust

Ooh la la! The second card in this spread addresses the passion in your relationship. First and foremost, this card reflects your sexual chemistry. But the idea of lust extends beyond that. The card in this position can indicate the intensity of the relationship, what you most crave and desire in each other, or what turns you on.

Start by examining the imagery of the card. It might be literal! Does the scene suggest a particular environment? An attitude? What is the character’s body language? Or the card might be symbolic of something. Perhaps what turns you on the most is your partner’s mind, their spirituality, their kindness, or something else. Does the card you have here suggest something along these lines? Lastly, the card drawn might indicate when you and your partner feel in the mood. Could this image describe a time, location, or situation that would get you both hot and bothered?

Remember that cards for conflict — ones that show fighting or aggression — can indicate a very active, steamy sex life! So the “bad” cards are not necessarily bad. Intensity is often expressed symbolically as a clash or struggle.

Position 3: How We Last

Rather than seeing this position as how long your relationship will last, regard it as recommending how you can create a lasting relationship. Difficult cards that come up here might indicate specific problems that must be acknowledged and attended to in order to achieve stability. Positive cards don’t simply guarantee success, they show you what is working and remind you to continue putting effort toward that.

To understand the card that you draw for this position, ask yourself how it might express the one thing that your relationship most needs to succeed. Who is in the card? Does it suggest something you can take on by yourself, something you need to do together, or is a family involved? What action is the character taking? Are they giving or receiving? Spending time alone? Having fun? Where are they? Out in nature? Relaxing at home? A night on the town? What symbols do you see in the card? Do they bring to mind common meanings that would be relevant to your relationship? Are there personal associations you or your partner have for these symbols?

Couples Tarot Reading

This might be fun to do with your partner to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Each of you use your own deck. The first person will lay out the cards for their spread, then the second person will put their cards next to or slightly overlapping their partner’s cards. You can help each other interpret your own cards, but also interpret how your cards interact with your partner’s cards.
